I bet that you’re thinking ‘whoa! Hold up Sophie!’ with a title like that, but sometimes I have to be cruel to be kind! Your branding could literally make or break your creative business.
Your branding isn’t just a pretty design that you see and you like the look of. Your branding visually represents absolutely everything that you are and what you stand for.
Having decent and bespoke branding can take you from £0 months through to £00,000 months (I have clients that this has happened to and it hasn’t taken them long at all!) Why? Because their branding has given them the power and confidence to reach new heights. It has also represented them as individuals and their brand values.
1: Don’t use free logo apps
Let’s just think about it for a moment… you go onto a design app like Canva and you grab their free logo because ‘what the hell, you need a logo…fast’ That logo is the exact same logo that is being used by thousands of other businesses too.
It isn’t going to make you stand out from the crowd – in fact it’ll do the exact opposite and make you blend in. It also doesn’t resonate with your audience and all of that ideal client work is now out the window!
2: Please don’t rush into it
Having a brand identity could also really excite you and I’ve seen so many people just want their branding done “right that very second”. Which is great… but not so much when you’ve not thought about it logically. You first up need to figure out who is going to design your branding for you. You need to know your ideal client and you need to do some work on yourself too.
What do you really love?
What colours represent you?
What design would make you feel proud and confident?
3: Get a full identity and not just a logo
A full visual identity will take you that extra mile and it will be timeless. You won’t be limited to the same repetitive logo and you will be able to use different aspects in different areas of your business. Yes a full visual identity is an investment for your creative business but you will get the rewards back in paying clients.
A full brand identity will also detract you from being a ‘hobbyist’ – you want people to take you seriously and you WANT to earn a living.
